What Are Small Group Workshops?
Small group workshops are designed around reading and math academic content. They are designed to teach a skill and encourage engagement between students and instructor. Workshops are hosted on the video conferencing tool Zoom just like one to one tutoring.
How are they different from 1:1 Tutoring?
The differences are:
-Shorter sessions: 40 minutes
-Cost: $20 per child, per session (sign up for as many as you want)
-Students get to engage with peers in addition to the instructor.
-Workshops are limited to 5-6 students to ensure each child gets the opportunity to participate.
-1:1 Tutoring sessions build on the previous the week's session and focus on an area of challenge. Small groups workshops are designed to be self contained lessons that are independent from each other. Workshops teach new skills. You can sign up for a single session a week or one everyday. Your student won't miss anything!
What is the learning format for workshops?
Play is what children do best and comes naturally to them. It is stress free and pleasurable, therefore the brain is most receptive to new information and skill development during play. For this reason My Rockin' Tutor takes a play based approach to learning. Workshops can vary in format depending on the activity, but generally have a small instructional component about 15% of the session with the remaining 85% given to games and activities that support the new skill for the day. During the play, Kara is watching and coaching so students get immediate feedback and support as they navigate playful learning. This strategy gives students the independence they crave and need while also feeling supported and encouraged to take academic risks.
What kind of topics will there be?
We will explore academic topics of high interest to students that span across many grade levels and are often revisited each school year due to their importance and time needed to master.
Topics Below Begin May 11- June 26, 2020
Fairy Tales / Fables: Students will explore the elements of fairy tales and fables and discover versions from around the world. We'll discuss how culture can influence story telling.
Grammar: Students will sharpen their grammar skills by learning the importance of grammatical rules with funny non-examples. Students will see how improper grammar can really change the meaning of a sentence!
Reading Fluency: Students will work together on fluency based games and activities. They'll be encouraged to develop an exciting reading voice and improve the smoothness of their reading, which supports comprehension. Older students will take on reading scripts to strengthen their outer and inner reading voice. They will analyze text to make decisions about their character's voice.
Nonfiction: Students will read with the goal to compare. We'll read a fiction and nonfiction text on the same exciting topic such as animals or robotics. Texts may be books, articles, pamphlets, charts, diagrams, websites, etc. We'll compare the texts for greater understanding of the topic and the author's purpose.
Puzzles/ Brain Teasers: Students will explore the ideas of strategy, logic, patience, and thinking outside of the box using various puzzles and brain teasers.
Fractions/Decimals: We will learn about fractions and their relationship to everyday life such as cooking and measuring. Older students will explore the connection between fractions and decimals.
Fact Fluency: This workshop is full of games the help students have fun while practicing their math facts to improve speed and accuracy. No timers will be used! Younger students will focus on addition and subtraction and older students on multiplication and division.
Measurement/Time: Students will explore how and why we measure and how measurement and time are connected. Older students will also practice elapsed time and time based word problems.
What days and times are the workshops?
Workshops are held in the mornings on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. There aren't any workshops on Wednesdays.
The Sign Up Genius link below details the exact days and times for each workshop.
What are the Groupings?
Zoom Group Calls
Unlike private 1:1 tutoring, group calls require an access code rather than a link. We will all be able to see each other as we chat! Once payment is received you'll be sent the access code to join the workshop at the scheduled time.
Payment and Cancellations
Once you have signed up you will receive an email with additional instructions for payment. Please sign up for all the sessions you want for the week. Sessions are reoccurring each week. Payment is due prior to your child's first workshop. Initial invoices will be sent within 48 hours of sign up. Invoices are then sent monthly. Any unpaid sessions will be opened to the public again. Payments are nonrefundable.
Cancellations will be honored when emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org at least 24 hours in advance. Cancelled sessions will receive a credit on the account and can be used for a future workshop session. No-shows or cancellations within 24 hours of scheduled session will result in forfeiting the session payment.
Each invoice includes directions for sending payment via Paypal, Zelle, Cash App,or Venmo. All payments will receive an itemized receipt.
How Do I Sign Up?
Sign ups occur on a rolling basis until a particular workshop is filled. While the name may not change between some workshops, their content will. For example a different book or internet tool may be used to work on the same kind of content. There is no deadline for sign-up. Your child can begin at anytime!
What if I sign up and my student is the only one registered?
In order for workshops to be successful we need a minimum of two students to be registered for the particular workshop. The weekend prior to the start of a new round of workshops, My Rockin' Tutor will asses the registration numbers. Any workshops with a single student registered will be cancelled and parents will be notified.
If a workshop has already begun and the number of registered students drops to 1, the family will be given the option to continue, select another workshop to join, forward money paid to future sessions, or will be given a refund.
To sign up, you'll need to follow a 3 step process:
1. Click this link: Sign Up Genius and select the sessions you want for the week.
2. Create an account with My Rockin' Tutor by selecting this link or the link in the toolbar on the homepage. Once your account is created I can add your child(ren) to the workshop calendar and generate an invoice.

If cancelled via email 24 hours in advance credit can be applied to the account for a future workshop.
