What Services Does My Rockin' Tutor Provide?

There are 2 types of reading sessions:

Standard (Non-OG): We specialize in inspiring children's love of reading by engaging in conversations that develop and challenge reading skills. I love exploring new topics through books, which is a fun and engaging way to study. Lessons incorporate word work (spelling), decoding, comprehension, and fluency. I enjoy sharing books that enrich children's learning by exploring current events, genres, and topics not typically found in a classroom curriculum. Our approach includes a read-aloud (beneficial for all ages and reading abilities), a brief lesson on a new concept, guided practice, and finally, incorporating the new skill into a game or hands-on activity.  Ms. Kaplan and Kara lead their own Standard reading sessions.

Orton Gillingham (OG): Includes the same elements as the standard sessions but is a highly specialized approach to support readers who have received high quality instruction, but are still struggling. This is possibly due to a diagnosed or undiagnosed reading disability. Ms. Kaplan, our resident Orton Gillingham-trained tutor, leads all Orton Gillingham sessions.

"The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia.  It is most properly understood and practiced as an approach, not a method, program, or system. In the hands of a well-trained and experienced instructor, it is a powerful tool of exceptional breadth, depth, and flexibility."      - Academy of Orton Gillingham
